Howler May 2025

This month the 5 Dogs Creek Howler has some inside tips on how to place higher at our match.

Ok, so in the newsletter LapDog & Domino Blaze don’t actually come out and SAY how to place higher at our next match, But I will. Are you ready? Listen closely….

If you want to rank higher at a monthly club match – you need to show up to THIS 5 Dogs Creek match May 3rd & May 4th.
Why?
Because a lot of the top shooters will be AWAY at the California State Championships that weekend. Away! Ha ha ha! That sort of clears out a lot of the upper area on the scores page for the rest of us to shine. Perfect. No pressure. Just aim well, stay cool and collected, have a good time and you have a decent chance of making it into the “Top Ten”. Ha ha! “Strategy”!! And an even better chance of making it into the top ten of your category.

We love our top shooters, but when they are mostly away, some interesting possibilities are presented for the rest of us.

Here’s one more tip for you. If you really try to hit each & every single target, sometimes those days are also your best scoring days too. It’s a mystery exactly how that happens, but it sometimes does. Might be something about slow is smooth & smooth is fast. Remember you can get a shiny prize for going any speed, even super slow – if you hit every target for the day. And you get your picture in the paper, which is a good reason to stay in  your cowboy duds for lunch.

In May all the start times go back to the usual times:
Office opening at 8:00,
Shooter Meeting 8:30, and
Match Starts at 9:00, BOTH Sat & Sun.

Camping is always available & FREE on nights before our Cowboy Action Shooting matches. No reservations required. C’mon over & spend the weekend with us at 5 Dogs Creek.

We had a great turn out this weekend at 5 Dogs Creek, especially for it also being EOT weekend. Nice of those top shooters to give the rest of us a chance to rank higher in a club match.

Saturday weather was really nice, warm & sunny all day. Green grass for miles. Little bunny rabbits bouncing all over in the morning. 5 stages of fun, the afternoon off, then a well attended potluck dinner. Ah, there is nothing so peaceful as the shooting range.

Sunday weather started out sunny, but soon got a little bit wild with a small twister at stage 3 that threw leaves and hats all over. Heavy rain had been predicted for Sunday but it did not come. It did rain for about 3 minutes as we were starting stage four, but it stopped as quick as it started & we all finished the match with blue skies & sunshine. Almost rainbow weather.

Some folks who dilly-dallied before heading home on Sunday reported blizzard snow conditions in Tehachapi about dinner time.

It’s possible that the favorite stage line was; “I tried being reasonable. I didn’t like it”.

Overall, another great weekend at 5 Dogs Creek, it’s always so nice to be having fun in such great company.

SCORES Jan 2025

We had a great weekend at 5 Dogs Creek! Even if it was cold at night and during the day. January. You know, the dead of winter and all that.
Professor Cubby Bear wrote good stages with cat themed situations. Fun!

Match starting time on Saturdays in February, March, and April will be 10:30am.
The office will open at 9:30 and the shooter meeting will be at 10:15. Hopefully this will ease the drive for shooters from out of the area to make the Saturday match, at least during the winter months. Sunday match time is not changed.

If you like this later Saturday start time, cast your vote by showing up on Saturday. That’s how we will know if this is popular, by how many people show up on Saturday. If you really like this later start time then bring some friends to the match.

Scores Dec 2024

This December match is a split month because the Sunday is the first of the month, and that means Saturday is the last day of the previous month. That happens once in a while. The 5 Dogs Creek Cowboy Action shooting matches are always the FIRST SUNDAY of the month, and the Saturday of the same weekend.

We had a good turnout for the match, which gave everyone a chance to walk off any pounds gained at Thanksgiving. The stages on Saturday were a throwback to the old days, the targets were a bit far out there. But hey, there were two clean shooters! Sunday’s stages were a bit better as shown by the nine clean shooters.

SCORES Oct 2024

This was the Gunfighter Throwdown! Everyone was encouraged to try shooting gunfighter style, if they wanted to. Only gunfighters are allowed to have both pistols in play at once. That also means cocking & shooting one handed, with both left & right hands. A lot of extra skills to develop!
Always a good time out at 5 Dogs Creek! 🤠

SEPT 2024 SCORES

Howdy!
Morning weather was really nice this Labor Day weekend for a shooting match. Stages were evidently written for speed and accuracy. We had a lot of both. There was talk about just what made those stages go faster. Not just quick stage times, but the whole posse was finishing with stages quickly & moving on. Maybe we can see a clue in this action photo.

Was it the way people were loading? The snappy costumes? Mentally preparing by shadow shooting? All of those sure sound good.
Do you see an abundance of something? Wait, let’s look at that from another view.
Faster brass picking seems to have sped things up!
This cowboy here may be partly responsible for the quickness felt by the whole posse. If you look again at that 1st picture, you’ll see we have 2 brass picker-uppers on the posse.
What you can’t see is folks lightening the load by picking up whatever brass was by their feet and dropping it into the brass picking contraption. Truly many hands make light work. Or light and fast work in this case.
Aaaaannnnd one cowboy, did save us all some time by turning in his first ever 11 second stage. Congrats to Coyote Carson! That is 22 shots fired from 4 different guns, from 2 different locations, no misses, and of course loading the shotgun on the clock. All in 11 and a half seconds. Here’s the almost unbelievable but true video.

You can check the Sunday scores to verify, stage 3 with a time of 11.58 seconds.
Speaking of which, here’s the scores!
